Ilana Kaufman will continue Amplifying Voices series with talk on Jews of Color and Jewish community diversity

Ilana Kaufman

Ilana Kaufman, the executive director of the Jews of Color Field Building Initiative, will hold a lunch and learn discussion on Jews of Color and Jewish community diversity on Wednesday, Nov. 18 at noon via Zoom, as part  of the Amplifying Voices series presented by the Tucson Jewish Community Center and community partners.

There are an estimated 7.2 million Jews in the United States, and something like 1,000,000 identify as non-white People of Color, says Kaufman.  However, when we look at almost every Jewish organization and our communal imagery we see few if any Jews of Color. Framed by the notion that U.S. Jews are part of a multiracial Jewish community, together we will explore the intersection of Jewish community/Identity/racial justice and equity.

Prior to joining the Jews of Color Initiative, Kaufman was the East Bay public affairs and civic engagement director for the San Francisco, Bay Area Jewish Community Relations Council. A Senior Schusterman Fellow, she received her B.A. in sociology from California State University-Humboldt and her M.A. in educational Ppdagogy from Mills College.

The Nov. 18 discussion is part three of the six-part series, which is presented in partnership between the Tucson J, Safety Respect and Equity Network, Arizona Center for Judaic Studies at University of Arizona, UA Hillel Foundation, Dunbar Pavilion, Jewish Community Foundation of Southern Arizona, Jewish Federation of Southern Arizona, and the Sam Levite JCC in Birmingham.
