Hadassah Southern Arizona will present a panel discussion, “Shhh … Our Matriarchs Are Speaking,” with three women, Joy Ladin, Ph.D., of Yeshiva University, and local Rabbis Batsheva Appel and Stephanie Aaron, on Thursday, Sept. 8 at 3 p.m. at the Tucson Jewish Community Center.

Ladin is the author of the memoir “Through the Door of Life: A Jewish Journey Between Genders,” seven books of poetry, including “The Definition of Joy,”  and a critical study of Emily Dickinson. She holds the David and Ruth Gottesman Chair in English at Stern College of Yeshiva University and visited Tucson in 2013, speaking to a variety of Jewish and University of Arizona groups. Appel is the rabbi-educator at Temple Emanu-El and Aaron has been the spiritual leader of Congregation Chaverim for over four decades.

Participants will learn “who these inspirational women look to for their own inspiration,” says event chair Debra Jacobs.

Along with coffee and cake, the event also will include a silent auction of gifts handmade by local women, such as paper crafts, beads and needlework. Hadassah Southern Arizona is seeking additional craft donations; contact Jacobs at postum 117@gmail.com for more information.

The cost of the event is $36 ($18 tax deductible). The student price is $18. RSVP by Aug. 29 by mailing a check (payable to Hadassah) to Debra Jacobs, 5940 E. Placita Alta Reposa, Tucson, AZ 85750.
