Invisible Theatre will kick off its Sizzling Summer Sounds cabaret series at Skyline Country Club with “Borscht Belt Boys and Girl,” featuring Jeffrey Haskell, Jack Neubeck and Katherine Byrnes, July 9 and 10 at 8 p.m.

Susan Claassen, director of Sizzling Summer Sounds and creator and director of “Borscht Belt Boys and Girl,” says, “As a kid I remember going to the Concord and Grossinger’s [hotels in New York’s Catskill Mountains, aka the ‘Borscht Belt’] and hearing tales of my beloved mother, Goldie, sliding down the banister with a champagne glass in her hand! We celebrate this rich cultural heritage of humor, food, incredible music and even a rousing game of ‘Simon Sez’ with our very own tummler (entertainer/ social director)!”

“Highlights of the show include ‘Yiddishe Momme,’ tunes penned by Isidore Baline (Irving Berlin), Jacob Gershwine (George Gershwin) and of course tributes to ‘Fiddler on the Roof,’ ‘Yentl,’ Jerry Herman and Hyman Arluck better known as Harold Arlen,” says Claassen.

Haskell, the former director of jazz studies at the University of Arizona, has collaborated with Claassen on a variety of projects and “is to jazz what corned beef is to a good deli,” she says. Neubeck, known as “Mr. Broadway,” performed in the original casts of “Evita” and “La Cage Aux Folles.” He recently appeared in IT’s “Olive and the Bitter Herbs” and performed with the Tucson Pops. Byrnes, a recording artist who grew up in Tucson, has performed all over the world. Her Tucson appearances include IT and the Gaslight Theatre.
