JFSA, WIC urge signing of anti-unilateral U.N. petition

The Jewish Federation of Southern Arizona and the Weintraub Israel Center are encouraging area residents to sign a “Petition Against a Unilaterally Declared Palestinian State” created by the Israel Action Network, a joint project of the Jewish Federations of North America and the Jewish Council for Public Affairs.

The petition, which will be submitted to the 193 members of the United Nations before the proposed Sept. 20 vote in the U.N. General Assembly on endorsing a unilaterally declared Palestinian state, can be signed at https://jcrcny.wufoo.com/ forms/petition-against-a-unilaterally-declared-palestine/.

A Sept. 8 e-mail to community members signed by JFSA Chair Jeff Katz, JFSA President/CEO Stuart Mellan and Weintraub Israel Center Co-chairs Daniel N. Karsch and Diane Weintraub, notes that “it is the policy and belief of both the United States government and the State of Israel that the only way to achieve a true and lasting peace in the Middle East is through direct negotiations and agreement between the parties, as they have previously committed to do.

“As stated in the petition, unilateral actions are not only a violation of previous agreements, but also will be detrimental to the parties involved. Agreements through negotiations will redound to the benefit of both the Israelis and the Palestinians. Signing the petition will enable us to express our support for peace in the region.”
