Langs contribute to food bank challenge

Janet Lang and Jim Peebles

Tucsonans Barry and Janet Lang have teamed up with Jim and Sandy Peebles to launch the “Lang/Peebles $60,000 Fill the Shelves Challenge” to benefit the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona.

One in four children in Pima County is at risk of hunger. Increased demand, coupled with decreased government food supplies and donations during these difficult economic times, have left shelves at the food bank bare.

The Lang’s $30,000 gift will come from The Barry and Janet Lang Donor Advised Fund held at the Jewish Community Foundation of Southern Arizona. Helaine Levy is also donating $10,000 through the Diamond Family Donor Advised Fund held at the Jewish Community Foundation to help meet the challenge.

Within days of the Lang/Peebles challenge announcement, the Click Family Foundation stepped forward to increase the challenge to $90,000 with an additional $30,000 grant. For every $1 donated, the food bank can distribute $9.50 worth of food. With the $90,000 challenge level, the fulfilled match will help the food bank distribute more than $1,700,000 worth of food.

To help meet the challenge by Dec. 31, go online to communityfoodbank.org to make a donation. Those without access to the internet may call 622-0525.
