What started out with Handmaker hosting one series of art talks in the fall of 2018 for the Tucson Chapter of the Brandeis National Committee has blossomed into a truly special partnership. Beginning this fall, Handmaker will host five different lecture series for this group, to the delight of Brandeis members and Handmaker residents. Handmaker provides the venue, and Handmaker residents are invited to attend the lectures, too.
Here are the five study groups:
Retired Professor Dr. Art Friedman will be returning this year to teach two study groups. Art has been an avid mineral collector for over 65 years and will bring in samples of his incredible collection for “Mineral Madness.” In this study group, attendees will learn how to classify and identify minerals and even take field trips to the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show and the Alfie Norville Mineral Museum. In his class on “Jewish Religious and Ritual Objects,” Art will share objects from his collection of ritual and heirloom Judaica and discuss their historical value.
Dan Weisz has always had an interest in nature and our desert. When he retired, he took up photography and birding more regularly. His “Meet Your Winged Friends” class will offer a series of presentations on the beautiful birds that share our corner of the world. This class has been a favorite of Handmaker residents for the last few years.
Anyone interested in recent Supreme Court decisions regarding such matters as voting rights, presidential powers, electronic surveillance, and more will enjoy attending John Risberg’s study group, “Current Issues in Supreme Court Jurisprudence.”
And everyone is excited to welcome back Harvey Wolfe for his class, “Classical Music with Harvey Wolfe.” Harvey is a retired cellist from the Cleveland Orchestra and has performed professionally for 60 years on five continents with most major conductors. At this year’s lecture series, Harvey will guide attendees through the music and entertain them with anecdotes about the lives of the Four B’s – Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, and a mystery fourth or more.
Handmaker is proud to host these Brandeis lectures, and residents are happy to be able to learn with and from Brandeis Committee members.
