JFSA-Northwest introduces chair exercise

The Jewish Federation-Northwest will offer Healthy-Steps chair exercise classes on Tuesday mornings from 9 to 10 a.m., beginning Feb. 12.

The gentle whole body workout is set to big band, jazz and swing era music. Based on the Lebed Method, it includes deep breathing, slow stretching and therapeutic exercises. The Healthy-Steps program is designed to improve postural awareness, balance, coordination, flexibility and muscle strength.

Classes will be led by Sheri Piper, a certified Lebed Method instructor. Healthy-Steps (www.gohealthysteps.com) was developed by two physicians and Sherry Lebed Davis, a professional dancer. Originally created to help breast cancer survivors thrive, Healthy-Steps has become popular with seniors. It eases symptoms of arthritis, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease and supports cancer recovery. Healthy-Steps has been recognized by the National Council on Aging and the National Cancer Institute. It is available in more than 700 wellness centers worldwide.
