Israeli pianist, Detroit songstress to jazz it up

Tamir Hendelman
Kathy Kosins

World-renowned Israeli jazz pianist Tamir Hendelman and Detroit jazz singer Kathy Kosins will present a concert sponsored by The Heartbeat of Israel and the Tucson Jazz Society on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 7:30 p.m. at the JW Marriott Starr Pass Resort.

Hendelman has performed with Barbra Streisand, Natalie Cole and Quincy Jones, among other artists. “What increasingly distinguishes Hendelman is his gift for imaginative arranging. For one thing, he will compose an introduction that makes it difficult to predict what follows, but seems perfectly suited — even organic —once the tune begins,” says AllAbout Jazz.com.

Vocalist and award winning songwriter Kosins grew up in Motown-era Detroit. She began singing and arranging background vocals for producer Dan Was in the early ’80s and became one of the most sought after session artists. She has recorded with numerous artists and toured throughout the United States and Europe. Kosins is also a noted abstract painter; a reception and exhibit of some her work will be held at the Tucson Jewish Community Center on Sunday, Nov. 20, from 5 to 7 p.m.

The concert is free with a Heartbeat of Israel pass (see jewishtucson.org or call the Weintraub Israel Center at 577-9393); otherwise, tickets are $35 (TJS members and military, $25; students, $20) and are available at tucsonjazz.org.
