The ARIZONA JEWISH POST has won a 2010 Simon Rockower Award for Excellence in Jewish Journalism from the American Jewish Press Association. “Chanukah on Christmas Avenue: Raising a Jewish family in Winterhaven” by Gila Silverman, published in our Nov. 26, 2010 edition, won a first place award in the personal essay category for newspapers under 15,000 circulation. HOWARD PALEY has been hired as chief development officer at HANDMAKER JEWISH SERVICES FOR THE AGING, a non-sectarian facility. Paley has more than 28 years experience as a marketing and fundraising consultant, including serving as president of AcuComm, Inc., from January 1992 through May 2011. He is a past president of Congregation Or Chadash, a founding member of Phoenix Opera Company, past president and founding member of Arizona Council for C.A.S.A., and a member of the Asylum Program of Arizona advisory board. LORI RIEGEL was recently hired at HANDMAKER JEWISH SERVICES FOR THE AGING as the coordinator of religious and cultural education. She will serve as a resource to residents and staff on Jewish issues and procedures and will help coordinate requests for information and classes on diverse religious and cultural topics. Riegel has been leading Friday Shabbat services at Handmaker for the past five years and was previously the education director at Temple Emanu-El.
She was selected as a Young Professional Fellow for the 2011 NewCAJE (Coalition for the Advancement of Jewish Education) annual educators conference held in Greensboro, N.C., July 31- Aug. 3, where she presented two sessions and had an article on the future of Jewish education published in the The Jewish Educator.
