“Stop and Read”: THA encouraging the love of reading

Tucson Hebrew Academy (THA) launched a schoolwide “Stop and Read” or STAR program on February 14th, which will allow the entire school to read together once a week.

Students are reading a book of their choice in their homeroom classrooms for 15 minutes on Fridays before heading to Kabbalat Shabbat. This weekly activity is meant to honor reading, while also reminding kids to make it a priority in their life.

THA celebrated Love of Reading Week to kick off the STAR program, with students dressing up as their favorite book characters on Monday. Tuesday, students were tasked with wearing a shirt that their friends could read. On Thursday, they dressed up as what they would like to be when they grow up, and Friday was PJ Day with blankets and pillows.

The school has set a goal of reading 300 books by the end of the year.
