A new musical program, Music, Memories, and Mitzvot, will weave song, stories, and learning about Jewish celebrations with the mitzvah of bringing joy to the elderly, says Rabbi Israel Becker of Congregation Chofetz Chayim. The program, for children ages 5-11, includes three Sunday classes in preparation for each of four holiday celebrations over the coming months.
After each pair of classes, participants will perform at Handmaker Jewish Services for Aging, for Chanukah, Tu B’Shevat, Purim and Passover. “I hope to create holiday memories for the children to share with their families and bring awareness to the importance of giving as part of the Jewish faith,” says Becker.
Classes are 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Chofetz Chayim on Nov. 18 and 25 for a Dec. 2 performance, Jan. 6 and 13 for Jan. 20, March 3 and 10 for March 17, and March 31 and April 7 for April 14. The cost is $36 per session, with a multi-child discount available. The program is in collaboration with Jewish Federation of Southern Arizona and Handmaker.
