Habitat for Humanity Tucson, in addition to building new homes for those who qualify, has a program to provide much-needed renovations to existing homes.

An article by BRYAN DAVIS, executive director of the JEWISH HISTORY MUSEUM, and ELIANE RUBINSTEIN-AVILA, Ed.D., a professor at the University of Arizona College of Education, “Holocaust education: global forces shaping curricula integration and implementation,” was published in “Holocaust Education: Promise, Practice, Power and Potential” (Routledge), edited by E. Doyle Stevick and Deborah L. Michaels.

garrett-holmTHE TUCSON JEWISH COMMUNITY CENTER and JEWISH FEDERATION OF SOUTHERN ARIZONA have hired GARRETT HOLM as special abilities coordinator through a grant provided by the Jewish Community Foundation and Jewish Federation aligned process. Holm will be based at the Tucson J. He has served in a variety of professional and volunteer capacities since 1996, including as a teacher, school administrator, policy analyst and advisor to the superintendent of public instruction for the State of Arizona, director of education and training for CARF International and president of the Academy for Certification of Vision Education and Rehabilitation Professionals. He received his bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Arizona and a master’s degree in education with a focus on social planning, policy and administration from Harvard University. In addition to serving as special abilities coordinator, he is a first year law student at the James E. Rogers College of Law at the University of Arizona.

HOTEL CONGRESS and its sister business MAYNARD’S MARKET + KITCHEN were recognized as Arizona’s Greenest Workplace by Mrs. Green’s World. The seventh annual Arizona’s Greenest Workplace Award was sponsored in
partnership with Tucson Electric Power, BeachFleischman CPA’s and Biz Tucson.

CHEF MICHAEL BENJAMIN POWELL, a Tucson native, is opening Simplicit Restaurant at the Temple of Music & Art this month in partnership with ARIZONA THEATRE COMPANY. Powell, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, was most recently executive chef at Babette’s in Crystal Grove, Newport Beach, Calif. He was chef of Soleil Restaurant in Tucson, Tarla Mediterranean Grill in Napa, Calif., and executive chef at West Marin Olema Farm House Restaurant.

A team of TUCSON HEBREW ACADEMY students took first place in the logic test at the fifth annual Southern Arizona Middle School Math Championships. Over 200 schools from across Southern Arizona were invited to the competition, held Dec. 8 at Rincon/University High School.
