PHYLLIS LEVIN GOLD has been named director of the Northwest Division of the JEWISH FEDERATION OF SOUTHERN ARIZONA. Gold served as executive director of Satori School for 23 years. Prior to that, she was director of undergraduate student advising for the psychology department at the University of Arizona. She also taught at schools in the Tucson Unified School District, Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind, Parent Connection and Pima Community College. She has served on the board of Tucson Hebrew Academy and lectured at local, state and national education conferences. A Tucson native, she holds a Bachelor of Arts in elementary education and a Master of Education in educational psychology, both from the UA.
SARAH CHEN has been named associate director of the Northwest Division of the JEWISH FEDERATION OF SOUTHERN ARIZONA. Chen holds a Bachelor of Arts in political science and Chinese from Trinity University, San Antonio, and a Master of Arts in public affairs from the University of Texas at Austin. She has held positions in advertising, university administration, city management and data analysis. Chen is a freelance writer for the Arizona Jewish Post and other digital and print publications.
ALIX CRAMER has joined TUCSON HEBREW ACADEMY as marketing and alumni relations coordinator. A native of Winnipeg, Canada, Cramer received her Bachelor of Commerce and Master of Business Administration degrees from the University of Manitoba. Before moving to Tucson two years ago, she lived in Tel Aviv and worked in marketing and account management for Israeli start-ups in the high-tech industry. In Tucson, she worked for Baccara, an Israeli manufacturing company that located its North American distribution center here.
CONGREGRATION ANSHEI ISRAEL has appointed RABBI RUVEN BARKAN as education and youth director. Barkan will head CAI’s religious school and United Synagogue Youth programs. Barkan was born and raised in Tucson. His background includes study in Israel, working as a counselor at Camp Ramah in California and undergraduate work at the American Jewish University in Los Angeles. He was ordained in 2001 at Jewish Theological Seminary in New York and served as rabbi-in-residence at the Chicagoland Jewish High School for 11 years. For the last three years, he was rabbi at Congregation Agudath Achim in Savannah, Ga.
