CONGREGATION ANSHEI ISRAEL has received the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism’s Centennial Schechter Commendation for the creation of mobile applications for Apple and Android devices that put synagogue communications, programs and events, including Shabbat and holiday information, at users’ fingertips. Congregant Gary Windham created the apps in 2012 after gathering feedback on desired features from clergy, lay leaders and others. He works at the University of Arizona information technology services department as an enterprise systems architect. The free apps can be downloaded from the iTunes App Store, Google Play (search for “CAI Mobile”) or the synagogue’s website, www.caiaz.org.

ot - cake labDAPHNA RON and EYAL RON opened CAKELAB, a gluten-free bakery, at 402 E. 4th St. last month. The Rons, who are brother and sister, grew up in Tel Aviv and emigrated to the United States in the early 1990s.

Owner JASON ASHKENAZI has represented hair care companies nationally and internationally at fashion events and editorial shoots for 10 years. He was an Emmy Award stylist in 2008 and 2009. SOHO Hair Studio has been featured in Allure, Marie Claire, In Style and People magazines.

BEYOND BREAD won third place in the best sandwich category at the World Food Championships in Las Vegas on Nov. 9, competing against 49 other participants to create a salmon-inspired sandwich.
