THE PETER AND PATRICIA LIKINS FAMILY, JEWISH FEDERATION OF SOUTHERN ARIZONA and ARIZONA CENTER FOR JUDAIC STUDIES at the University of Arizona have awarded the 2012-13 John Likins Memorial Scholarship to MARIA FERNANDA VELASCO. The scholarship supports an incoming freshman from a Tucson area high school, majoring in any field related to gender, race, religion, ethnicity or area studies. The amount of the award varies from year to year, depending on the annual distribution from the endowment, which is held at the Jewish Community Foundation.
Velasco graduated from University High School, where she was a violinist, a dancer, and active in the Law Club’s mock trial. She has volunteered at the Arizona Historical Society and an elder-care facility and is active in her church. Her other awards include the Wildcat Excellence Award, the Hispanic Heritage Youth Award, the Regent’s High Honors Endorsement Award and the AP Scholar Award.
