The Arizona Jewish Theatre Company in Phoenix will present the Arizona premiere of “My Name is Asher Lev,” written by Aaron Posner, and based on the novel by Chaim Potok, March 24-April 3.
“My Name is Asher Lev” had its world premiere in Philadelphia in January 2009. Set in Brooklyn, N.Y., mainly in the 1950s, the play explores the conflicting traditions of the Orthodox Jewish world versus secular America. Asher has the talent and desire to become an artist, but his family and community do not value his art, which is viewed as frivolous and secular, not worthy of one’s time nor attention.
Performances are Thursdays through Sundays at the John Paul Theatre on the campus of Phoenix College, 1202 W. Thomas Road.
Adena Potok, Chaim’s widow, served as an artistic consultant during the creation of the play and worked with the director and cast of the Arizona production.
