The Southwest Jewish Education Center, directed by Rabbi Shafir Lobb, is sponsoring a weekend with Cantor Richard Kaplan May 5-7, including a memorial and service of healing concert honoring the victims of the Jan. 8 shooting on May 7.
Kaplan, who is also a teacher and ethnomusicologist, has performed professionally as a singer, songwriter and pianist for more than 40 years. His concert repertoire of Jewish world music includes songs from Ashkenazic (European), Mizrachi (Middle Eastern) and Sephardic (Spanish/Andalusian) traditions, as well as original pieces, often based on ancient melodies and texts.
The concert will be held Saturday, May 7 at 7:30 p.m. at the Scottish Rite Cathedral, 160 S. Scott St. Tickets are $26 in advance and $36 at the door, with reserve seating and reception options available.
Other events include a dinner and class on Thursday, May 5; an invitational hike/ride in Sabino Canyon Friday, May 6; Shabbat dinner and service May 6; “Gott in the Himmel” Shabbat morning service followed by a potluck lunch and free concert in Himmel Park May 7; and a Seudah Shlishit (third meal) May 7.
