AMY HIRSHBERG LEDERMAN won an Arizona Press Club 2010 first place award for “Best Column Writing” for her columns in the ARIZONA JEWISH POST. The judge commented, “Consistent voice, thoughtful pieces that begin with small situations that she turns to universal truths. It’s rare to see this kind of reflection in newspapers.” The awards were presented at the Arizona Press Club’s annual awards party on May 21.

THE UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA HILLEL FOUNDATION board of directors unanimously approved the following slate of officers for 2011-2012 at its meeting May 11: Steve Kippur, chair, executive committee; Amy Lederman, chair, nominating/board development committee; Michael Campbell, chair, annual concert; Shelley Fleischman Heyman, treasurer; Andy Shatken, secretary; Steve Rodgveller, immediate past chair.  New board members include Michael Achtman, Dina Benita, Steve Caine, Marc Epstein, Justin Gelzayd, Jane Herz, Bob Kaplan, Rachel Martin, Nancy Ozeri, Brook Weisz, and Nicole Siegel.

THE TIPS PARTNERSHIP, which includes the JEWISH FEDERATION OF SOUTHERN ARIZONA, has helped create an ETHNIC COOKS COOPERATIVE in Kiryat Malachi, Israel. The cooks, who visited Tucson in 2009, catered their first meal for Birthright Israel students from Phoenix and Las Vegas on May 29. The cooperative hopes to open a restaurant in Kiryat Malachi that will celebrate the ethnic groups the women represent through food, music and costumes, says Ira Kerem, TIPS coordinator in Israel.
