Elaine Judith Smelkinson, 71, died Feb. 23, 2011.
Born in Baltimore, Md., Mrs. Smelkinson graduated high school at age 16 and was a registered nurse. After earning a bachelor’s degree in 1985, she moved into psychiatric nursing. After retiring, Mrs. Smelkinson did volunteer work chairing community events for organizations including Hadassah. She lived in Phoenix before moving to Tucson.
Survivors include her husband of 46 years, Paul Smelkinson; children, Jennifer (Mark) Cassius of Tucson, Karen (David) Sapoznikow of Seattle, and Mitchell (Lisa) Smelkinson of Los Angeles; and six grandchildren.
Services were held at Evergreen Mortuary with Rabbi Robert Eisen of Congregation Anshei Israel and Rabbi Elon Sunshine of Congregation B’nai Shalom of Walnut Creek, Calif., officiating. Interment followed in the Congregation Anshei section of Evergreen Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Congregation Anshei Israel or any Jewish federation.
