In recognition of Drowning Impact Awareness Month, Tucson Medical Center and the Tucson Jewish Community Center are partnering to host the annual Community Water Safety Day on Sunday, Aug. 24, from 1 to 4 p.m.
The free event, hosted at the Tucson J, is designed to promote water safety while providing an afternoon of fun for families. Attendees can enjoy pool access, a live DJ, games, local
vendors, and demonstrations focused on water and sun safety. Snacks will be available for
sale to benefit the Tucson J’s Stingrays Swim Team.
Drowning Impact Awareness Month began in August 2004 through an initiative by Phoenix
Children’s Hospital and is now the largest collaborative water safety effort in Arizona. The
summer months — particularly June, July, and August — are peak times for child drownings in the state, and back-to-school distractions in August can increase those risks. The best way
to stop childhood drowning is to prevent it from happening in the first place. Once a child is
in the water, it may be too late — but prevention is powerful, and awareness is free.
To prevent child drowning, follow the ABC’s of Water Safety:
- Active adult supervision
- Barriers between children and water
- Classes, such as CPR and swimming lessons, and Coast Guard-approved life vests for
inexperienced swimmers
Community Water Safety Day is free and open to all families; no registration is required.
