SandRuby Community Programs: New Adventures and Community Spirit

SandRuby Community Programs has been providing care for adults and respite for their caregivers for many years. Part of the Handmaker Family of Services, SandRuby provides a safe, social environment for older adults, where they are surrounded by friends and trained and loving staff, and have the opportunity to engage in a wide range of activities.

Robert Coombs has been the SandRuby Community Program Manager for four months. In that short time, he’s brought new energy and excitement to the program.

While SandRuby has always offered regular outings, members of this Adult Day program now enjoy two fun-filled community day trips each week. Recent adventures have included a scenic drive through Saguaro National Park East, a visit to the Reid Park Zoo, a trip to the movies, and a mural scavenger hunt.

Back on site, there’s never a dull moment. Members celebrate monthly birthdays together, relax during mini spa days, and have a blast at the new monthly “Pool and Suds” event, where they enjoy root beer floats while playing pool. Alfonso, one of the program managers, leads painting classes, and everyone gets to leave their handprint — literally — on the SandRuby front window. Cooking classes are a hit, with banana splits topping the list of favorites, and weekly music therapy with Garrett keeps everyone singing and moving. To top it off, the monthly Talent Show gives staff and members a chance to get silly and show off their unique skills.

Robert’s mantra is simple: “Meet people where they are.” He makes sure to ask members what they want to do when planning each month’s calendar. As the weather cools, he plans to add even more outdoor activities — gardening, exploring local venues, and now, helping at the group’s newly adopted park. Starting this month, the SandRuby Superstars will visit the Todd M. Harris Sports Complex once a month to pick up trash and keep it looking beautiful. They’re proud to do their part for the community and can’t wait to see their new “SandRuby Superstars” sign at the park.
