Of Blessed Memory: Sam Horowitz

Samuel I. Horowitz, 79, died Aug. 18, 2025, in Rockville, Maryland, after a yearlong battle with leukemia. He was formerly a resident of SaddleBrooke, Arizona. 

Sam grew up in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, where he attended yeshiva day school and forged a deep passion for Judaism. He served in the Peace Corps in Guatemala, ran a college Hillel, lived on a kibbutz in Israel, led missions to the USSR, and spent 35 years as a Jewish Federation professional, according to a eulogy by his son Daniel.

Sam was a former chair of the board of the Institute for Judaic Services and Studies,  now Congregation B’nai Midbar, and active in numerous clubs in SaddleBrooke.

Survivors include his wife of  48 years, Lorna Michelson; sons, Ari Horowitz (Heather Hall) of Land O Lakes, Florida, and Daniel Michelson-Horowitz (Kimmy Feinstein) of Washington, DC; grandchildren, Davina and Jeremiah; and many in-laws, nieces and nephews, cousins, and dear friends and family. Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. A. David Horowitz in 1998 and Fayga Horowitz (Keidan) in 1981, and his brother Fred Horowitz in 2023.

Services and interment were held in Paramus, New Jersey.
