My Favorite Things: Suggestions for Old Folks Like Me (P.S. Hanukkah is Coming)

*Grabbers … my absolutely favorite thing: I use them to pick up items from the floor or to take things down from a cabinet. I own four.

CAUTION: Don’t use a grabber to pick up unfinished dog or cat food. I’ve dropped bowls twice.

*Fly Swatters: Some months ago, I was inundated by flies. I have no idea where they came from.  I killed 25 flies in two days (I counted them). So I ordered flyswatters online. Now I have them in every color … one for each room.

*Jar and Bottle Openers: I used to have very strong hands, but arthritis has taken its toll.

*Bad Hair Day Hat … in three colors: You already know why.

*Extra Dog Leashes: Some days I can’t seem to find one.

*Standing Desk: It is a good choice for those days when sitting at my computer for hours aggravates my back problems.

*Pouf for my Feet: Keep those legs up and avoid swollen ankles.

*Where is My Phone Feature on my Apple Watch: I use it to locate my phone a few times a month.

*Extra Fanny Pack… with sections for dog treats, poop bags, and phone: Again, I need a second one for when I can’t find the first.

*Extra Phone Case: Ditto.

*Shower Mats and Grab Bars to avoid fallingUnfortunately, I have to bend down to pick the mats up and rinse them off. When I shower, I keep my Apple Watch, iPhone, and Medical Alert in the bathroom. Nothing like overkill.

*Big Supply of Toilet Paper, Laundry Detergent, Dishwasher Detergent, Soap, , Toothbrushes, Shampoo, Tissues:  I heard that people stocked up on toilet paper during COVID. I didn’t have to, as I always have enough supplies for at least three months.

*Calendars (Secular and Hebrew) to check dates and record all my appointments Squares are large enough to accommodate all necessary information. I never misplace the calendar. My problem is reading my handwriting.

*Pad and Pen/Pencil: I am a list maker, for shopping and appointments.

*Weekly Pill Box: Obvious.

*Reading Glasses and a Magnifying Glass: Why do companies use labels with such tiny print?  Particularly medicine bottles.

*Hebrew-English, English-Hebrew Dictionary: It is a necessity for my daily on-line Hebrew study with Duolingo.

*Tzedakah Box: It is hard to lose a charity box.  But I have two.

Address & Phone Book: I have a great memory, but not for numbers.

*Emergency Contacts: I display names/numbers of my children above my desk.

*Flashlights: I have three, for the bedroom, the kitchen, and the office.

*Sunscreen: I’ve already had Mohs surgery twice.

*Personal Address Stickers: My handwriting has deteriorated over the years. There are people who no longer write letters or send cards and do everything online. I am not one of those people.

*Envelopes with safety closures: For all my mailings.

*Scotch Tape: I use it to enforce all envelope closures. Okay, so I’m neurotic.

*Stamps: I only use Breast Cancer stamps! (since my diagnosis 35 years ago)

*Band-Aids:  For the scratches I get in the garden or around the house.

*Iodine:  My scientist husband, Shelby, used iodine for all wounds.  I have become an iodine booster as well.

*Tape Measure: Believe me, it comes in handy.

*Scissors: I have at least two, one in my office and one in the kitchen, as I am always misplacing one or the other. There may be a third in the garage, if I can find it.

*Bookmarks:   I frequently read more than one book at a time.

*Shoehorns:  I find them good for my feet and good for my shoes.

If a reader has any additional suggestions, I would love to hear them.
