Letter to the Editor: Now More Than Ever, Invest in Jewish Education

Melissa Spiller-Shiner with her husband and their two childrenAs a parent, a Tucson Hebrew Academy board member, and a proud member of this community, I’ve seen firsthand how Jewish education shapes not only our children’s minds but also their hearts.

When my husband and I enrolled our son at THA, we were initially drawn by the small class sizes and sense of community. What we found was something deeper — a school rooted in Jewish values, where our children are celebrated, nurtured, and challenged. My son is not only receiving an excellent secular education — he is also learning who he is, where he comes from, and why that matters.

In the wake of October 7, I felt a renewed urgency to strengthen our community. I joined the THA board and began volunteering with efforts to combat antisemitism locally. For me, supporting Jewish education is no longer optional – it’s essential.

Arizona’s dollar-for-dollar tax credit allows individuals and businesses to redirect their state tax dollars to provide scholarships for Jewish day school students.

Here’s how it works:

  • Individuals can donate up to $1,459 (or $2,910 for married couples filing jointly) and receive the full amount back as a credit on their Arizona state taxes. Donations for the 2024 tax year can be made up until April 15, 2025.
  • Businesses can also contribute through the corporate tax credit program, which has no individual cap.

This is a chance to directly support Jewish education in Tucson and ensure more families can access the kind of community and academic excellence we have found at THA.

To make your contribution, visit www.jetco.org or call (520) 647-8442 for help navigating the process.

Now more than ever, let’s invest in our children, our values, and our future.
