Acclaimed songstress Neshama Carlebach is coming to the Tucson J, Saturday, March 1 from 7:30-9:00 pm. The performance, titled BELIEVE, is part of the 2024-2025 Beth and Mike Kasser Patron of the Arts Signature Event Series and presented in loving memory of Ray Lederman.
Neshama, daughter of the late Rabbi and renowned composer, Shlomo Carlebach, is an award-winning singer, songwriter and educator who has performed and taught in cities around the world. As the first then-Orthodox woman of her generation to perform for a mixed-gender audience, she is a strong advocate for religious pluralism and human rights. Since her debut album, Soul, in 1996, she has released 10 records, each showcasing her vocal range, power, versatility, and her unique blend of various genres including classic Hebrew folk songs, contemporary pop music, jazz and gospel.
The singer will be joined by her family for the performance and the evening will begin with a Havdalah ceremony. Each ticket includes a complimentary beverage, and complimentary childcare is available with advance registration.
“Since October 7, 2023, the world has often felt like a dark place. This musical gathering is another opportunity to come together, to be inspired and to experience the sense community.” said Jennifer Selco, Sr. Director of Jewish Life + Engagement at the Tucson J. “We are honored to welcome Neshama and her family and look forward to an unforgettable evening of music and community.”
BELIEVE, among other events in the J’s Signature Series, is intentionally designed to help foster connection with the self and one another and inspire participants to lead meaningful Jewish lives using the arts as a platform for engagement. Now more than ever, it is important for the Jewish community and its allies to come together. In a blog post in the Times of Israel, Neshama shared, “My Jewish identity and desire to learn have never been stronger. I feel a greater sense of urgency to do my part and bring meaning and holiness to our communities, both in the Diaspora and Israel. My love of our global Jewish family and appreciation for our shared rituals have never been deeper. Each and every one of us, regardless of gender, personal choice, practice, preference or location, is called to step up and show up now. It is our time.”
