Wicked, the movie based on the Broadway musical, based on the book by Gregory Maguire, has brought the musical back to mainstream popularity. To date, the movie has grossed over $350 million domestically and is once again shining a spotlight on a stage that has been profoundly influenced over history by Jewish songwriters.
The musical version of Wicked in fact was written by Jewish composer Stephen Schwartz. And from Gershwin to Sondheim to Bernstein, Jewish talent has defined musical theatre for generations, shaping the sound and spirit of Broadway.
Broadway favorites by Jewish composers include Annie Get Your Gun, Guys & Dolls, My Fair Lady, West Side Story, The Sound of Music, Annie, Mary Poppins, A Chorus Line, Chicago, Les Miserables, The Little Mermaid, Rent, Wicked and so many more.
Stephen Sondheim, legendary Broadway composer known for his deep impact on the American musical theater scene, once said, “The great Broadway musicals were created by Jewish composers, and I believe that they have a universal quality because of their ability to connect with people of all backgrounds. They were able to mix Jewish melodies and rhythms with American jazz and theater traditions, creating something distinctly American, yet rich with emotional depth and universal appeal.”
