JFCS to Hold LEAH Workshop to Raise Awareness About Elder Mistreatment

Lori Mars, Director of the National Center on Elder Abuse and assistant professor of clinical family medicine at the Keck School of Medicine of USC

LEAH (Let’s End Abusive Households) is a crucial program operated by JFCS of Southern Arizona, dedicated to supporting Jewish survivors of interpersonal violence. This initiative addresses a critical need within the Jewish community, offering compassionate assistance and resources to those who have experienced domestic abuse, sexual assault, and other forms of interpersonal violence by providing intense therapy and counseling. It also provides education, information, referral, and advocacy for those Jewish individuals and families experiencing interpersonal violence.

While LEAH’s core mission is supporting Jewish survivors of interpersonal violence, the program also recognizes the importance of addressing related issues that affect the broader community. In this spirit, JFCS is hosting an upcoming virtual workshop titled “Caregiving, Elder Mistreatment, and Ageism” on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, from 12 pm to 1 pm.

This workshop aligns with the program’s goal of promoting safe and healthy households. The presentation will be led by Lori Mars, JD, LLM, Director of the National Center on Elder Abuse and assistant professor of clinical family medicine at the Keck School of Medicine of USC.

The workshop will cover several important topics, such as the challenges of caregiving, the link between caregiving and elder mistreatment, signs and risk factors of abuse, and prevention strategies.

This workshop demonstrates JFCS’s commitment to addressing various forms of abuse and mistreatment across different demographics, complementing LEAH’s focused work with Jewish survivors of interpersonal violence. For those interested in attending this informative workshop, registration is available online at bit.ly/ElderMistreatment. LEAH, partially supported by Jewish Philanthropies of Southern Arizona, continues to be a vital resource for Jewish survivors of interpersonal violence. Through its dedicated services and community education efforts, LEAH is working towards its goal of ending abusive households and fostering a safer, more supportive community for all.
