Of Blessed Memory: Bill Sampson

William (Bill) Sampson, born April 28, 1948, passed away July 20, 2022, in Tucson, Ariz.

Born in Chicago, Bill came to Tucson with his parents, Walter and Charlene (Shafer), and Sister Judy in 1965. Bill achieved Master’s degrees in both Music (French Horn – Performance) and Physical Education. He performed with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra and coached volleyball and softball at several local high schools.

Together with his wife, Martha Z”L (married 1986), Bill was a passionate supporter of our Jewish community; especially Tucson Hebrew Academy (THA), Congregation Anshei Israel (CAI), and the Jewish Philanthropies of Southern Arizona (JPSA). They dedicated rooms both at THA and CAI in honor of their parents who instilled Jewish ideals in them. They were also instrumental in both building the Women’s Mikvah and the renovation of the Community Mikvah as well as donating funds for the new ark cover at CAI.

Bill and Martha valued Jewish education, culture and identity and were proud that their two sons, Bryan and RJ, were alumni of THA and had their bar mitzvahs at CAI. While Bryan and RJ have moved from Tucson, they both have promised to continue the tradition of giving to our community.

Donations in Bill’s memory can be made to William and Martha Sampson Philanthropic Fund through JPSA.

The service will be held at Evergreen Chapel on Sunday, July 24th at 10 am.

For those that cannot attend, it will also be streamed here.
