Gertrude A. Shankman, 105, died July 24, 2020. Gertrude was born Oct. 26, 1914 in Brooklyn, New York. She was a longtime resident at Handmaker Jewish Services for the Aging, where students from Tucson Hebrew Academy had visited to celebrate her birthday ever year since she turned 100.
“As a survivor of both polio and cancer, Gertrude’s mere existence today is pretty remarkable. But it is her personality, intelligence and vitality that are most inspiring,” Nanci Levy, Handmaker’s community outreach coordinator, told the AJP in 2017.
Shankman also participated in the multigenerational “Tracing Roots” program, which paired Handmaker residents with Tucson Hebrew High students.
Memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared with the Shankman family via East Lawn Palms Mortuary & Cemetery.
