Martin Brent Halpern, 78, died Jan. 21, 2018.
Mr. Halpern grew up in Tucson and was valedictorian at the University of Arizona before earning his Ph.D. in physics from Harvard and doing post-doctorate studies at the University of California at Berkeley and Princeton University. He was awarded a postdoctoral NATO fellowship at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, among other honors. A theoretical physicist, he was a professor at UC Berkeley and a visiting scholar at CERN and the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen. After retirement, he returned to Tucson.
Mr. Halpern is survived by his wife, Penelope Halpern; daughter, Tamar Halpern of Los Angeles; and one grandson.
Services were held at Evergreen Mortuary with Rabbi Batsheva Appel of Temple Emanu-El officiating, followed by interment in the Temple Emanu-El section of Evergreen Cemetery.
