UA Hillel Holocaust vigil to emphasize testimony

The University of Arizona Hillel Foundation’s annual 24-hour Holocaust vigil will be held from Wednesday, March 26 at noon till Thursday at 12:15 p.m. on the UA Mall.

This year’s event will offer a variety of discussions, films and exhibits that address the theme, “For the dead and the living, we must bear witness.” The theme focuses on the importance of survivors’ testimony for those in the next generation who may not hear it firsthand.

The vigil, designed by students, is also an opportunity to help increase tolerance and understanding.

Participants will have an opportunity to sign a pledge “to never be a bystander or silent to tragedies happening around the world.” The Butterfly Project, a worldwide effort to create 1.5 million ceramic butterflies in memory of Jewish children killed in the Holocaust, will continue at this year’s vigil. Last year, more than 220 butterflies were made during the vigil.
