Jewish youth choir seeks members for new season

The Tucson Jewish Youth Choir, led by Cantor Janece Cohen, is seeking singers for its 14th season. The group, for ages 7-14, performs at major events throughout the Tucson community, such as Tucson Meet Yourself, the Jewish Food Festival and the Israel Festival. Singers also participate in a choir trip each spring. Previous trips have included Los Angeles; Las Vegas; Las Cruces, N.M.; El Paso, Texas; Prescott, Ariz.; Phoenix and other Southwest locales.

The choir’s repertoire features songs in Hebrew, English, Ladino and Yiddish.

“The children learn to perform with confidence, they master an extensive Jewish repertoire, and most importantly, they make friends and have positive Jewish experiences that they will treasure for a lifetime,” says Cohen. Several choir graduates have gone on to pursue careers in music, she notes. Two have attended conservatories and three are currently enrolled in university musical theater programs. Many also have starred in their high school musicals.

The choir meets Wednesdays from 3:40 to 4:30 p.m. at Tucson Hebrew Academy. The first meeting this year will be Oct. 2. For more information, contact Cohen at 488-6868.
