Robert Polinsky

obit-Bob PolinskyRobert (Bob) Steven Polinsky, 66, died Jan. 11, 2012, after a year-long struggle with esophageal cancer.

Born in St. Louis, Mo., Mr. Polinsky was a graduate of Webster University, where he studied art and sculpture. He lived and taught in Canada after finishing his art degree, completing a number of large public works art projects and receiving numerous Canada Council grants for study and sculpture. Mr. Polinsky moved to Seattle, where he met his spouse, Bob Nichol. After a 25-year engagement, they were married in New Westminster, British Columbia in 2006. Mr. Polinsky attended Seattle University, where he obtained his teaching degree. He became a K-3 teacher in Central Kitsap School District in Washington. The couple later relocated to Houston, Texas, where Mr. Polinsky taught in city schools and was designated “Teacher of the Year” several years running. Upon retirement, Mr. Polinsky and Mr. Nichol relocated to Tucson where they volunteered with many community organizations including the Tucson Jewish Community Center, where Mr. Polinsky served on the board of directors. Mr. Polinsky’s driving passion was the Tucson International Jewish Film Festival. In the few years he was involved at the JCC, he was recognized with the “Leadership of the Year” award, “Volunteer of the Year” award and “Star of Giving” award.

Mr. Polinsky was preceded in death by his sisters, Barbara and Helene. Survivors include his spouse, Bob Nichol, their children and a large extended family.

A memorial celebration will be held Sunday, March 4 at 3 p.m. at the JCC.
