Genealogy group to hear Europe travel expert

Sol Sylvan will present “The Nine Most Important Words You Need To Know Before Making an Ancestral Visit To Eastern Europe” at the Tucson Genealogy and Oral History Group’s meeting on Sunday, March 11 at 12:30 p.m. at the Tucson Jewish Community Center.

Have you ever wanted to breathe the air of your ancestral shtetl? Sylvan, a historian who has made nine visits to Eastern Europe, will discuss advance preparation and research, making travel arrangements, hiring guides and translators and what to expect when you arrive. The presentation will include a 21-minute video of his visit to Lvov, Lanovtsy and environs in Ukraine.

Sylvan earned his bachelor’s degree in history from Wayne University in Detroit, Mich., and did graduate work in anthropology at the University of Michigan. He has been researching his family’s history and helping others online since 1995. He is involved in maintaining and preserving the Mass Grave Memorial in Lanovtsy, a Lanovtsy ShtetlLink page and a translation page of the town’s Yizkor book.

Suggested donation, $5. RSVP to Andy Rosen at 237-6470 or arosen2@cox.net.
