AJP wins journalism awards

The Arizona Jewish Post is celebrating two journalism awards this spring.

Sheila Wilensky

Associate Editor Sheila Wilensky received a first place 2011 Simon Rockower Award for Excellence in Jewish Journalism from the American Jewish Press Association for “Healing and hope for Tucsonans as Jan. 8 anniversary nears.” Published in the Dec. 23, 2011 issue of the AJP (https://azjewishpost.com/?p=11576), the article was deemed “Best in the category by the sheer nature of the national story and the access the reporter had to the subject,” according to the judge. The award for Excellence in Feature Writing (Division C. Newspapers under 7,499 circulation) was announced on June 13 at the AJPA’s annual conference, held this year in Philadelphia.

Phyllis Braun

Executive Editor Phyllis Braun won a second place award from the Arizona Press Club for non-metro feature headline writing. The headlines entered in the contest included “Love, pride, socks: military moms lend support” (AJP 10/28/11); “Talking trash: leadership camp is ecological eye-opener (8/2/11); and “Jewish women can build homes – literally” (10/28/11). The Arizona Press Club awards were announced at a party in Phoenix on May 19.
