Arizona Theatre Company will bring the Kurnitz family to life in Neil Simon’s Pulitzer and Tony-winning “Lost in Yonkers” Feb. 26 through March 19.
Called “the best play Simon ever wrote” by the New York Post, “Lost in Yonkers” chronicles the Kurnitz family’s efforts to stay together during World War II. Grandma Kurnitz, played by Judy Kaye (a Tony Award-winner for “The Phantom of the Opera”), is the matriarch with a will of iron and a hardwood cane who spared no rod in raising her four children. When her two teenage grandsons are forced by circumstances to live with her for a year, the clash of generations leads the whole family to learn important lessons about love, duty, devotion and trust.
“Lost in Yonkers” is the fourth installment of ATC’s five-year America Plays! Celebrating Great American Stories series, which includes free community engagement opportunities designed to enhance patrons’ experience of the play. This year, ATC will hold a “1940s Family Fun Fair: Red White and Yonkers” in front of the Temple of Music and Art on March 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The fair will celebrate “Lost in Yonkers” while simultaneously saluting our current troops. It will include vintage cars, activity booths, food vendors, performances on a USO-style main stage and the opportunity to donate items such as drink mixes, snacks, toiletries and games for the troops.
