Rose Rudis, 92, died Oct. 12 in Seal Beach, Calif.
In 1938, Mrs. Rudis escaped the Nazis by walking across the thin ice of the Rhine River from Austria into Switzerland, where she was reunited with her boyfriend, Joe Rudis, who had escaped the Gestapo days earlier. They married several months later. In 1948, they immigrated to the United States, eventually settling in Tucson, where Mrs. Rudis kept the books for her husband’s auto repair shop, Joe Rudis Garage. In 2007, after 50 years in Tucson, they moved to Seal Beach, to be near family.
Mrs. Rudis was predeceased by her husband of 70 years, Joe Rudis. Survivors include her children, Esther Rudis of Los Angeles, Al (Ruthie) Rudis of Seal Beach and David (Pauline) Rudis of Chicago; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services and interment were held in Los Angeles.
