BRUCE ZORTMAN has published a book, “Eight Little Candles Plus One: A Hanukkah Tale” (Strategic Book Group). Zortman was a professional educator for 25 years.

REP. GABRIELLE GIFFORDS was named “Tourism Champion of the Year” by the Arizona Office of Tourism last month, recognizing her efforts to oppose last year’s call to boycott Arizona because of the state’s new immigration law, SB 1070. In addition, the Community Food Bank will open its new Gabrielle Giffords Family Assistance Center on Sept. 23, built with funds from tribute gifts received in her honor after she was shot on Jan. 8. The new center will give food bank clients improved access to services such as help signing up for SNAP (food stamps) and tax preparation assistance.

JACQUELINE MILLER has won a 2011 Grinspoon-Steinhardt Award for Excellence in Jewish Education from The Harold Grinspoon Foundation and The Steinhardt Foundation for Jewish Life. She is one of 44 Jewish educators from 36 communities honored this year. A teacher at Tucson Hebrew Academy, Miller received the Outstanding Judaic Educator Award from the Jewish Federation of Southern Arizona in May.
