JOHN GARRARD, professor emeritus of Russian studies at the University of Arizona, and his wife and co-author CAROL GARRARD will deliver the Jack Fischel Lecture at the 31st Annual Millersville University Conference on the Holocaust and Genocide in Millerville, Pa., April 6-8. The Garrards will speak on the Holocaust in Belarus, focusing on the Brest Ghetto Passport Archive, which was copied and brought to the West by the late Louis Pozez, a longtime Tucson resident. With a grant from the Pozez foundation, John Garrard had the list translated, digitized, and made searchable on the web in five languages. He donated the database to Jewishgen.org, where over 100,000 people have used it to retrieve information about their relatives.
ELENA ECELBARGER, a fifth grade student at the Temple Emanu-El Kurn Religious School, won a Young Writer’s Award at the Tucson Festival of Books. Her winning story in the third to fifth grade category was “The Best Toy.”
