It’s a Girl Thing! program gets 4th year at CAI

Congregation Anshei Israel is continuing “Rosh Hodesh: It’s a Girl Thing!” for a fourth year. The nationwide program uses Jewish teachings to help pre-teen and teenage girls make healthy life choices and features an informal setting, small group size, and carefully designed activities.

The program is free and is open to all Jewish girls in 6th through 9th grades in Southern Arizona. It is led by Autumn Wiley, M.A., a doctoral student in clinical psychology at the University of Arizona with a background in women’s studies. She has led the program for the last three years.

At meetings, girls talk about relating to friends, siblings and parents; create art; perform skits; do yoga; cook; dance; eat; and simply hang out together. (Parents are not allowed at meetings, except for the introductory meeting.)

Groups will meet at Congregation Anshei Israel once a month on Sundays, beginning Sept. 11 (6th and 7th graders, 12:15 to 2:15 p.m.; 8th and 9th graders, 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.).

Parents and their daughters are invited to attend a “Taste of Rosh Hodesh: It’s a Girl Thing!”orientation on Sunday, Aug. 21, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Dinner will be included.
