Congregation Chaverim is creating a brick patio in memory of Karla Ember, former cantorial soloist, who was stabbed to death in September 2010. A former boyfriend was convicted of first-degree murder in the case on Dec. 6.
“Karla was one of the bright lights of our congregation and there is an empty spot in the hearts of everyone whose life she touched,” says Marlene Morton, who is chairing the memorial patio fundraiser. “Because Karla was a victim of domestic violence, we plan to use a portion of the funds to educate children to learn to recognize the signs of healthy, unhealthy and abusive relationships. We will be working with representatives of domestic abuse agencies to plan educational workshops for the children.”
Community members may purchase commemorative bricks, which will be individually engraved. Bricks can advertise a business, honor a family member or commemorate a special event, such as the birth of a child, says Morton.
The cost of a 4″ x 8″ brick is $125 ($100 each for two or more). The cost of an 8″ x 8″ brick is $300. Individuals and businesses purchasing 8″ x 8″ bricks will be acknowledged on Chaverim’s website donor page and in their monthly newsletter.
Funds raised will also benefit Congregation Chaverim’s religious school and other programs.
