“Israel: From Dream to Reality” is the theme for Congregation Anshei Israel’s scholar-in-residence, Rabbi David Golinkin, who will give talks on Feb. 11 and 12.
Golinkin is president and professor of Jewish Law at the Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies in Jerusalem.
On Friday, Feb. 11 at 8 p.m., he will present “Heavenly or Earthly: Will the Real Jerusalem Please Stand Up.” The talk follows a 5:45 p.m. Shabbat service and 6:45 p.m. dinner. On Saturday, Feb. 12, at the 9 a.m. Shabbat service, he will deliver the D’var Torah on “The Crisis of Jewish Identity in the State of Israel,” and at 4 p.m. Torah study, he will discuss “The Love for Israel in the Talmud.”
Born and raised in Arlington, Va., Golinkin made aliyah in 1972, earning a bachelor’s degree in Jewish history and two teaching certificates from The Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He received a master’s degree in rabbinics and a doctorate in Talmud from the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, where he was also ordained as a rabbi. For 20 years he served as chair of the va’ad halachah (law committee) of the Rabbinica Assembly, which gives halachic guidance to the Masorti (Conservative) Movement in Israel. He is also director of the Center for Women in Jewish Law at the Schechter Institute. Golinkin is the author or editor of 40 books and has published over 190 articles, responsa and sermons.
