RUTH ZALES will be honored as the Tucson recipient of the Kipnis-Wilson/Friedland Award during the 2010 International Lion of Judah Conference in New Orleans Nov. 8-10. In addition to her work with the Jewish Federation of Southern Arizona’s Women’s Philanthropy, Zales is a member of Jewish Federations of North America’s board of trustees. She has served on many local civic and Jewish organization boards and chairs JFSA’s Overseas Allocations Task Force.
Local organizations will recognize Spirit of Philanthropy honorees at the National Philanthropy Day luncheon of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (Tucson chapter) on Nov. 9. Those to be honored include DIANE KATZ, Tucson Electric Power and The Haven; DR. JEFFREY KATZ, Jewish Federation of Southern Arizona; JANE KIVEL, Handmaker Foundation; LIZ NEUSCHATZ, Tucson Jewish Community Center; LYN TORNABENE, University of Arizona College of Fine Arts; and ELIZABETH WEINER-SCHULMAN, Jewish Family & Children’s Services.
DANIEL MATLICK, president of United Fire Equipment Company, was inducted into the Arizona Fire Service Hall of Fame last month, a distinction previously limited to active or retired fire department personnel, during opening ceremonies of the 37th Annual Arizona State Fire School. Matlick was the first to volunteer and maintains a scholarship for the State Fire School to assist small fire departments with training. He created the Arizona Firefighter of the Year Award, now in its 17th year. He is currently president of the 4th Avenue Merchants Association and executive director of the Last Alarm Foundation. Matlick, who assisted with peer review for the Department of Homeland Security firefighters grant program, holds a U.S. Department of Justice ATF Federal Explosive License. He has earned his Firefighter 1, Firefighter 2 and Inspector 1 certifications and was the first certified Jaws of Life instructor in Arizona.
TSILLA SHAMIR has published a book under the pseudonym Dafna Lazar, “The Hard Road to Staying Thin, Healthy and Youthful, While Enjoying Life and Food to the Fullest” (PublishAmerica). Now living in Tucson, she was born and and raised on a kibbutz in Israel. Shamir has taught Hebrew at Boston University and other institutions. She has published several books in Israel, including a volume of poetry.
