Matzah ball quest to spice up Jewish food fair

A Guinness Book of World Records attempt at the world’s largest matzah ball will be a highlight of the third annual Jewish Food Festival & Family Fun Fair on Sunday, Nov. 7.

The event will be held at Brandi Fenton Memorial Park, 3482 E. River Road, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with food from more than 15 Tucson restaurants, local artisans and entertainment including Israeli dancers, Klezmerkaba and Jimmy and the Jitterbugs. Special guests from Israel will be the Ethnic Israeli Women’s Cooking Group. Chef Jon Wirtis of Shlomo & Vito’s New York Delicatessen will attempt to break the Guinness record with a 500-pound matzah ball that will require a specially made 6 foot by 6 foot pot and 600 gallons of soup. The official weigh-in will take place at 11 a.m., after which the matzah ball will be served.

Participating restaurants include Acacia, Amber Restaurant & Gallery, Azul, Bluefin, Cactus Rose, Elle, Fleming’s, Hacienda Del Sol, Jonathan’s Cork, Lotus Garden, Luna Bella, Maynard’s Market & Kitchen, Shlomo & Vito’s and Sullivan’s Steak House.

Admission is $4, with children under 13 free. Proceeds will benefit the Tucson Community Food Bank, the Primavera Foundation and event organizer Congregation Or Chadash. For more information, see www.JewishFoodFestival.com or call 512-8500.
