Kids’ program to add to Sukkot water event

The Third Annual Sukkot Water Drawing Celebration will be held Sunday, Sept. 26 at 4 p.m. at the Tucson Jewish Community Center. It will focus on sustainability not only with respect to water, but also in community life.

The PJ Library, a program administered by the Jewish Federation of Southern Arizona’s Coalition on Jewish Education, will hold a story and craft time for young children with Amy Hirshberg Lederman in the sukkah while the main event takes place in the Heritage Room. The program will start with a short presentation on water issues in Israel by Guy Gelbart, the new community shaliach and Israel Center director.

As a way to strengthen community connections, members of other faiths will join in leading some of the Psalms of Ascent, says Deborah Mayaan, event coordinator and member of the Southern Arizona Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life steering committee.

Adults and children will gather outside for the water procession, which will be followed by snacks. Material on water conservation and harvesting and local water experts will be on hand. Participants should bring a reusable pitcher or bowl for the procession.

The event is sponsored by SAZ COEJL in collaboration with the JCC, Jewish Community Relations Council, CJE, PJ Library, Israel Center, Jewish Arts Alliance and Deborah Mayaan Israel Festival Fund at the Jewish Community Foundation of Southern Arizona.
