Professor Asher Susser, a visiting Israeli scholar at the University of Arizona, will present “The Middle East in the 21st Century: The Decline of the Arabs” at the Jewish Federation of Southern Arizona’s Northwest Division Kickoff Event next month.
The kickoff will be held Thursday, Dec. 9, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Hilton El Conquistador Resort.
Susser, a visiting scholar in modern Israel studies at the UA’s Arizona Center for Judaic Studies, is director of external affairs and senior research fellow at the Moshe Dayan Center for Middle Eastern Studies at Tel Aviv University.
Funds raised from Northwest residents during the 2011 Campaign will directly affect Jewish programming in nine Northwest zip codes. Half of these monies will be used to fund Northwest events such as monthly book clubs, Torah study, men’s groups and Rosh Chodesh programs, plus special events such as an Israeli film day in the SaddleBrooke Desert View theatre on Sunday, Jan. 9, 2011.
The other half of funds raised by Northwest residents will help support JFSA’s beneficiary agencies in Tucson, Israel and around the world.
The kickoff will include an introduction to the Local Emergency Assistance Fund, which JFSA recently launched in response to unprecedented requests for economic assistance from Jewish Tucsonans. LEAF will provide assistance with housing costs, food, job placement and more.
Hors d’oeuvres and dessert will be served. The event is $15 per person and reservations are required. To RSVP, visit www.jewishtucson.org, call 557-9393, or e-mail events@jfsa.org.
