ADAM ZELDIN, a student at Johns Hopkins University, has received a Bloomberg Scholarship, a competitive scholarship that provides full grant funding of the student’s financial need. The scholarships were established by Michael Bloomberg, a 1964 JHU alumnus and current mayor of New York City, and continued by an anonymous donor.

Several Jewish community individuals and organizations were honored at the Association of Fundraising Professionals Southern Arizona chapter’s 2011 National Philanthropy Day luncheon on Nov. 9.  The NOAH COHEN MEMORIAL YOUTH PHILANTHROPY FUND at Congregation Or Chadash was recognized as Outstanding Youth Philanthropists. Local organizations recognized honorees with Spirit of Philanthropy Awards, including BARRY COREY, Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona; FRED FRUCHTHENDLER, Jewish Family & Children’s Services; ROB GLASER, Arizona Theatre Company; BONNIE KAY, Humane Society of Southern Arizona; HARRIET KRONMAN, Socal Venture Partners Greater Tucson; STUART SHATKEN, Tucson Jewish Community Center; KATHRYN UNGER, Jewish Federation of Southern Arizona; and BILL and BRENDA VINER, University of Arizona Student Affairs.

STEPHEN SELTZER has been appointed vice president of learning opportunities for the Brandeis National Committee’s National Executive Board, based in Waltham, Mass. Seltzer, a retired nephrologist, is a longtime member of the Tucson chapter and is currently its vice president of publications and chair of the Eat Dessert First Fellows men’s group.

REP. GABRIELLE GIFFORDS will receive the 2011 National ATHENA Award, which honors a woman leader who demonstrates professional excellence, gives back to her community and assists other women in realizing their full leadership potential. It will be presented at the annual ATHENA Awards luncheon, which will be hosted by the Arizona Small Business Association on Sept. 22 at the Westin La Paloma Resort.

SALLY JUNTIFF was recently chosen as Woman of the Year for Hadassah Southern Arizona. Juntiff was a vice president of fundraising for the chapter for many years and is currently chair of the dining out fundraising progr.

“The Heyday of Children’s Bookselling” by SHEILA WILENSKY appeared in Publishers Weekly (July 18, http://tinyurl.com/3mxdfxw). Wilensky, the assistant editor of the Arizona Jewish Post, owned Oz Children’s Bookstore in Southwest Harbor, Me. She holds a master of arts in teaching degree from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and has taught high school and college social science.

RONI CAPIN RIVERA-ASHFORD has won several Purple Dragonfly Book Awards for outstanding children’s books for “My Nana’s Remedies/ Los Remedios de mi Nana,” published by the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum Press. Her book earned first place in the cultural diversity category, first place for family matters, and an honorable mention in the educational/instructional category.

KERI LAZARUS SILVYN has been named one of 10 finalists for the Athena Southern Arizona awards by the Arizona Small Business Association. She is a partner at Lewis and Roca and, says the ASBA, “is the visionary behind Imagine Greater Tucson” and chair of its board of directors.
